JUNEAU - The Capital City

We arrived in Juneau early Friday afternoon on the 26th of August and were greeted by a welcome sign that appeared to have been changed for some reason. We were just in time to share the city with five cruise ships that were in port. There were people and more people and then some more… Someone asked how many people can you put on this island and the answer was “One More”.
After driving through Juneau, we decided to head out to Tongass National Forest Campground to find a campsite for the night and visit downtown Juneau later. Tongass campground is a very nice campground with sites that have full hook-ups to tent camping. In addition to all the amenities at the campground, one thing that stood out to us was that the camp ground was just across the lake from the Mendenhall Glacier. Mendenhall is a very beautiful glacier that has a large water fall right next to it. It is on a lake that was full of glacier ice that looked like dozens of small icebergs. After a good night’s rest, we decided to tackle the town of Juneau regardless of all the tourists and tackle the town we did. We went through every shop (tourist trap) and carried away our share of the bounty. After a day of battling the crowds and winning most wars, we still had the energy to take on the Gold Creek Salmon Bake,
Another all you can eat and that’s just what we did. Wow, did that bed feel good later. Up early and off to see the Mendenhall Glacier up close. The visitor’s center at the glacier was very educational with excellent views of the glacier and surrounding landscape. Enough time playing on land, it’s time to board the ferry for approximately two days to our next venture which is Ketchikan…

Our campsite for the two nights we were in Juneau. Very nice with prices ranging from $24 with full hook-ups to $5 for dry camping.

When we attended the salmon bake we were the only customers. They had around 500 people for lunch and were expecting another 300 for dinner. We timed it just right, all the food and all the attention...

Some pictures of one of the most beautiful glaciers we have seen.
