Skagway

Well after some deliberation, about one minute, we decided to jump on one of the fast ferries for a forty five minute ride to Skagway for the day. We were fortunate that the weather was clear and the water was like glass. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery and wildlife both going to Skagway and returning to Haines. You know, you would think after awhile one would tire of seeing glaciers, waterfalls, cliffs, snow covered mountains and all kinds of wildlife living in or around the water. There must be something wrong with us because we seem to be just as amazed as we were the first time we saw them. These ferries are very nice with very comfortable seating and glass all around for great views from anywhere on the ferry. Of course this was not a problem for us, for the day we went we were two of five passengers on the boat. The ferry normally carries over fifty passengers. Skagway is a small town that is mostly shops and restaurants catering to the cruise ship crowds. In fact the day we went to Skagway there were five cruise ships in port. Most of the shops are owned by the cruise ship companies from what we were told. However, we did enjoy going through the shops and eating in the restaurants, for a little while we felt just like tourists ourselves? Hope you enjoy some pictures of the scenery getting to Skagway and the town it’s self. Maybe some of the pictures from downtown Skagway will bring back memories from those who have taken a cruise to this area.

Linda standing on the dock waiting for our fast ferry to Skagway. Notice the cruise ship behind Linda... Haines gets two cruise ships a week on a good week. Skagway gets up to five a day sometimes.

This is our fast ferry. a real nice smooth boat. With the Alaska saver coupon book you buy one fare and get one free.

I finally realized that even with a new hairdo nothing seems to help...

A view of Haines on our return trip...
